Since 2009, the Glenmorangie Private Edition Series has epitomised the TWR manifesto. Each new edition (the Glenmorangie Allta included) has pushed the boundaries of tradition. Through creative experimentation they’ve pioneered new flavours and inspired the world of single malt Scotch whisky.
Yesterday, the award-winning series marked its tenth anniversary with the launch of Glenmorangie Allta (Gaelic for ‘wild’). This first of its kind Scotch whisky uses a strain of home-grown wild yeast to produce its rich and fruity flavour. The distillery’s director of distilling, whisky creation and whisky stocks, Dr Bill Lumsden, discovered the unique strain and believes it enhances the depth of flavour.
TWR had the opportunity to join Dr Lumsden and Brendan McCarron in Johannesburg last night for an exclusive live virtual tasting of the new release. The Cape Town event takes place on the 7th of February and our team at the new HQ cannot wait.
Whisky Rebel, Sean Gunns, reports back, “A surprisingly good whisky considering the age and casking. Around 8 years in spent ex-bourbon barrels. A fantastic reference whisky in that it gives great merit to the often forgotten third ingredient in whisky: yeast. Buttery, biscuity, malty and fruity, this whisky takes the drinker back to the meat and bones of the ingredients used in production. Less focus on the wood, more focus on the beer. And the cherry on top: 51.2% ABV. A real gem (one for the geeks) and I can’t wait to start using it in our tastings.”
If you’re itching to get your hands on this limited-edition Glenmorangie original, you won’t have to wait long. It will be available for purchase through Wild About Whisky’s online top whisky brands store, from around the 5th of February 2019. It will retail for about R1100 a bottle.
